Can I have vaginoplasty in Turkey as an international patient?

Yes. Many trans women from the UK, Europe and the USA travel to Istanbul for gender-affirming vaginoplasty. Our licensed agency arranges an online consultation with a partner plastic surgeon, a written quote, your hotel, transfers and interpreter support. Your surgeon decides whether you are eligible and which technique suits your body and goals.

How long will I need to stay in Istanbul after vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty involves a longer stay than most cosmetic procedures, because you will have a hospital stay, early check-ups and dilation training before flying home. The exact number of days depends on the technique and on how you heal, so your surgeon will confirm your stay before you book any flights.

Do I need to dilate after vaginoplasty?

Yes, if your surgery creates a vaginal canal. Regular dilation keeps the new canal open and helps maintain depth while it heals, and missed dilation is a leading cause of narrowing. You will be taught how to dilate before leaving Istanbul and given a schedule, which usually becomes less frequent over time.

What is gender-affirming vaginoplasty?

Gender-affirming vaginoplasty, often called MTF bottom surgery, creates a vagina and vulva, including labia and a clitoris, usually from existing genital tissue. The aim is a body that feels right to you, with sensation preserved as far as possible. Some people want a vaginal canal for penetrative sex; others choose a zero-depth result. Both are valid choices.

At our partner hospitals in Istanbul, operations are performed by experienced plastic surgeons. Neda Deniz Health Tourism Agency Ltd. is authorised by the Turkish Ministry of Health and coordinates your care from the first message to aftercare at home.

Who is vaginoplasty for?

The NHS lists surgery as one of the treatments adults with gender incongruence may choose, alongside hormone therapy and talking therapies. The WPATH Standards of Care, Version 8 (SOC8) describe general criteria surgeons use for genital surgery, such as:

  • an assessment by a qualified health professional confirming marked and sustained gender incongruence;
  • the capacity to give informed consent to the procedure;
  • any other physical or mental health conditions being reasonably well managed;
  • a period of stable hormone therapy before surgery, unless hormones are not wanted or not medically suitable.

Requirements differ between surgeons. Many ask for around 12 months of hormone therapy, a psychological assessment letter and permanent hair removal in the genital area before vaginoplasty. During your free consultation we confirm exactly which documents your surgeon needs, so there are no surprises later.

Vaginoplasty techniques

Your surgeon will recommend a technique after looking at your anatomy, medical history and goals. In general terms:

  • Penile inversion is the most widely used technique. Penile and scrotal skin is used to line the vaginal canal and form the vulva, and the glans is shaped into a clitoris.
  • Peritoneal vaginoplasty uses the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), usually through keyhole surgery, to line part of the canal. It may be considered when there is less available skin.
  • Intestinal (bowel) vaginoplasty uses a segment of bowel to line the canal. It is a bigger operation and is mostly used for revision surgery or when other options are not suitable.
  • Zero-depth vaginoplasty (vulvoplasty) creates the external vulva without a canal, so no long-term dilation is needed.

Recovery and possible risks

As a general guide, recovery from lower surgery takes around six to twelve weeks before most people return to normal routines, and full healing takes longer. You will have swelling and discomfort at first, a urinary catheter for the first few days, and restrictions on sitting, lifting and exercise. Dilation is the most important part of aftercare: it is done several times a day at first, then less often over the following months, and continues long term for most people with a canal.

Like any major surgery, vaginoplasty carries risks. Published clinical reviews and WPATH guidance describe complications such as:

  • bleeding, infection or wound separation;
  • narrowing or loss of depth of the canal (stenosis), most often linked to missed dilation;
  • urinary problems, such as a sprayed stream, urinary tract infections or narrowing of the urethra;
  • changes in sensation, or results that need revision surgery;
  • rarely, a fistula (an abnormal connection) between the vagina and the bowel or bladder.

Your surgeon will explain your individual risks before you consent. Stopping smoking, dilating as advised and attending check-ups all help recovery.

How much does vaginoplasty cost in Turkey?

Prices depend on technique and stages; contact us for an itemised quote. When people compare vaginoplasty cost in the UK vs Turkey, the useful question is what each quote actually includes. When you compare quotes, check that each one itemises:

  • surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees;
  • hospital stay, nursing care and medication during your stay;
  • pre-operative blood tests and checks;
  • dilators and initial medical supplies;
  • hotel accommodation for your recovery period;
  • airport, hotel and hospital transfers;
  • interpreter support and post-operative check-ups in Istanbul;
  • remote follow-up after you return home.

Our surgery cost guide explains how to compare quotes line by line. It focuses on top surgery, but the same checklist applies to lower surgery.

Why patients choose Turkey

Turkey has become a major destination for gender-affirming surgery. Patients often choose Turkey for surgeons who perform these operations regularly, hospitals working to Ministry of Health standards, and costs that are often lower than private treatment at home because of exchange rates. One team organises transfers, accommodation and translation, so you can focus on recovering. Our guidance continues long after you fly home. Vaginoplasty in Turkey: frequently asked questions

Can I have vaginoplasty without hormone therapy?

Some surgeons accept patients who do not take hormones for medical or personal reasons, but most ask for a period of hormone therapy first. Requirements differ between surgeons, and we confirm yours during the consultation.

Do I need hair removal before surgery?

Many surgeons recommend permanent hair removal in the genital area before penile inversion vaginoplasty, as hair inside the canal can cause problems. Ask your surgeon how long before surgery to start.

Can a friend or partner come with me?

Yes. Many patients travel with a companion, and we can include them in hotel and transfer arrangements.

Will the NHS treat complications after surgery abroad?

The NHS provides urgent care, but routine follow-up after private surgery abroad may not be available. We keep you in contact with your surgeon after you return, and you should register any surgery with your GP.
